COME OUT AND VOTE IN THE IMPENDING DISTRICT ASSEMBLY ELECTION

December 24, 2010
The Founder and CEO of Global Media Foundation (GLOMEF), a human rights and anti-corruption media organization based in Sunyani, Raphael Godlove Ahenu has called on Ghanaians to take the impending District Assembly election very seriously and come out to vote massively for competent Assembly members for their respective electoral areas.
According to him, it is worrying that many Ghanaians have decided not to vote in the impending District Assembly election which is scheduled to take place on the 28th of this month.
Mr. Ahenu expressed this sentiment during a voter education forum with members of the Christian Mother’s Association and Catholic Women Association of the Catholic Church at Odumase, the District Capital of the Sunyani West in the Brong-Ahafo Region.
He said it is important that every eligible voter votes to decide how the social, economic and political affairs of their respective Assemblies are managed.  According to him, Assemblies are responsible for the overall development of their Districts, saying the pace of development depends largely on the quality of representation.
The major development interventions by the Assemblies, he said include provision of basic amenities such as schools, hospitals, water, markets, lorry parks and roads, among others.  Mr. Ahenu observed that many people have no interest in the District Assembly election because District, Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies in the country have failed to meet the needs of the citizens and politicization of the Assembly system.
These according to the CEO of GLOMEF, have influenced many Ghanaians to lose interest in the decentralization concept.  He appealed to the electorate to vote for women aspirants in their various electoral areas.
The Leader of the Women, Augustina Twumawaa, urged women to take a keen interest in the decision-making process by take part in the impending Assembly election.  She advised them to educate their girl child to prepare them for leadership positions in the future.
